Now that the summer is on its way, it’s time to go through your house and get it ready for the warmer weather. It is a good idea to start with your bedroom. That way the first warm night will not catch you out and you won’t end up being too hot to fall asleep.
Change your bedding
The first task is to change from your winter bedding for something that is more suitable for the warmer nights. Swap your heavy winter duvet quilt for a lighter one and treat yourself to a more summery looking, bedding set. As you can see here there is plenty of choice available.
For the first month or so of the summer, it makes sense to keep an extra blanket or throw to hand. That way, if the temperature drops one night you will be able to just pull it over you.
Opt for a cooler colour palette
In the winter months you are trying to create a nice cosy vibe. But, in the warmer months you want your bedroom to look crisp, clean and fresh, so the room does not look too warm and stuffy. Swapping your darker coloured bedding, rugs and artwork for pastel shades can really help you to create the cooler vibe you need. It sounds daft, but as you can see by reading this article about “the psychology of colour” the shades choose to decorate a room with really do make a huge difference to how you feel when you are in it.
Consider updating your curtains
If you find that the dawn is waking you up, buy some heavier curtains or installing a blind as well. Doing so, will keep the daylight out of your room and enable you to enjoy a lie in, when you want to. Before you go shopping for new curtains take the time to read our “10 tips for choosing curtains for your home” article. Doing so will help you to buy the right type and get the best deal.
Buy a water jug
Buying yourself a plastic water jug and a cup to go with it can be a good idea. That way if you wake up feeling that you need a drink you will not have to get out of bed to slake your thirst.
Set up a fan or test your air-conditioning unit
On very hot night´s you may find that having a fan on will help you sleep. If you already own one, get it out, give it a good clean and check that it is working properly.
Now, is also the right time to turn your air-conditioning on and test it, if you have it. Make sure that you clean the filter and wipe the entire unit over with a damp cloth.
Get your summer PJs out
Pack away your heavy dressing gown and pyjamas and treat yourself to some new ones that are more suited for wearing on warmer nights. Swap your slippers for a more lightweight pair.
As you can see getting your bedroom ready for the summer will not take you long. But, it is well worth doing because it means you will sleep far better.
