Lighting up your outdoor space is just as important as the interior of your home. Research shows that a well-lit home is less likely to be targeted by a home invader, plus it can be useful to have your entrance or pathway lit up on a dark night to make it easier when you return home. These days there are plenty of top quality outdoor lighting options available, including LED security lights from LED Hut and other specialist retailers.
There are several ways to light up your garden to make it more secure. Many of these methods have the added benefit of making your outdoor spaces look great too. If you do it right, installing garden security lighting can turn it into a place you and your family will want to spend more time. Here are a few examples of what we mean.
Lighting your boundaries
Home invaders tend to target properties that have somewhere dark where they can stand and observe. They like to be able to jump the fence and take some time to check what is going on in the house before making their move. Therefore, installing lighting along the edge of any fences that back onto public spaces makes it harder for home invaders to get into your garden without being seen, which greatly puts them off.
Using spotlights you can bathe these vulnerable areas in a soft, but still effective, light. At the same time, you can use these spotlights to uplight any nice looking plants that you have planted alongside that fence. This turns them into beautiful night-time features.
Lighting your entranceways
Installing some sort of light either side of each exit from the house onto your garden space is also important. Doing this makes it difficult for a home invader to get close enough to break in. Plus, it makes it far easier for you to be able to spend time enjoying your garden at night. Plus, of course, outdoor wall lamps or lampposts make a house look more attractive.
Path and deck lights
Lighting up your paths and other areas like your pool, hot tub or deck can also help. They will look stunning and create large pockets of light throughout your garden, which makes it harder for a home invader to make their way from the perimeter of your garden to your home.
Keeping the costs of garden security lighting under control
Basically, the better lit your garden is the more likely it is that home invaders will stay away. The only problem is that leaving lots of lights on outside can work out expensive. That is why it is worth considering installing some ordinary movement sensitive security lights as well. If you do this, you can turn off your decorative outdoor lighting completely when you go to bed and let the security lights take over. Provided they are fitted with the right type of movement sensor they will turn on immediately and scare the invader away.
It is also worth buying the type of lighting fixtures that can accept LED bulbs. These use a lot less power than halogen bulbs do, which can save you a significant amount of money, over the course of a year.
