A Guide To Designing A Family-friendly Living Room

The famous saying mentions that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but it can be argued that the living room is instead. There are thousands of memories made snuggling on the sofa together, watching films, or having a relaxing adults-only evening once the kids are in bed.

As such, your living room needs to work as a family-friendly room. Here are some tips to design your space to fit everyone’s needs.

Prioritise durable and easy-to-clean materials

Anybody with children will know that having furnishings and fabrics that can withstand daily wear and tear is crucial in family areas. For your large pieces of furniture consider fabrics such as leather and other wipe-clean options.

Not only will this mean your furniture lasts longer, but it can also look stylish and fit in with your décor seamlessly.

Choose appropriate furniture

The furniture you choose needs to be both practical and suit your tastes. Consider the layout of your room. You may find that a comfy corner sofa leaves you with more floor space when compared to a traditional sofa. Plus, corner sofas offer plenty of seating options for the whole family.

Next, think about extra pieces such as coffee tables and side tables. Coffee tables may not be a priority, especially for families with toddlers and younger kids. But, you will need somewhere to keep your coffee out of the way!

Incorporate ample storage

Having a tidy living room can help everyone relax at the end of a long day. There’s something about toys and clutter everywhere that prevents your brain from switching off.

Multi-functional furniture is a great option, especially if you have a smaller room to deal with. Think about hidden storage within footstools or seating benches that can fit under the window. These are the perfect place to hide extra blankets or toys when they are not being used.

Built-in storage is also another option. You can maximise oddly shaped alcoves and tall ceilings by getting bespoke pieces made. Temporarily, you can install some floating shelves to keep things off the cupboards and sides.

Add personal touches and warmth

A family room should reflect the love and fun you all have as a family. Be sure to finish the space off with lots of personal touches. You could opt to print out canvases of treasured family memories such as holidays, days out and silly moments.

Artwork is also a popular choice. If you have budding young artists who would love a living room gallery, you can get frames where the pictures are easy to change when inspiration strikes. Soft furnishings such as cushions and blankets are the perfect way to bring a room together. They can be used to add colour and texture as well as a dash of personality. Just make sure there are enough for everyone to avoid fights!
