How To Design A Zen Bathroom At Home

Having a calm, relaxing place to get ready in the mornings and unwind at the end of the day is key for bringing tranquillity into your day. Bathrooms are typically the place where people get ready, so why not transform this space into a zen haven?

Getting inspiration for this change can be difficult. Be sure to look at designers online and visit bathroom showrooms for ideas that you can embrace. In the meantime, here are some tips for you to start with.

Simplify the space

Bathrooms can often end up with lots of clutter. From different hair products to skincare and bath toys, having things everywhere can detract from you being able to relax.

To transform this into a zen space, start by decluttering. You need to be a bit ruthless and get rid of products that you don’t use or bottles that don’t have products left in them. Once you have done this you can start thinking about storage. Focus on units that you can close doors on and hide away. Out of sight, out of mind!

Natural materials and colours

When it comes to décor, keep it to a minimum. Too much can make a room feel busy and that would create the opposite atmosphere.

Opt for natural materials such as bamboo and stone. Using these well helps to embrace nature which inherently is calming and relaxing. You could do bamboo panelling along your bath, for example, or use natural stone for the flooring.

Colours should also be kept more neutral. Soft greys and beiges are perfect for relaxing rooms. If you do want to add colour, stick to pastel or muted tones.

Real lighting

Natural light is always the preferred type of lighting for calm spaces. However, sometimes bathrooms can be dim and dingy. This is especially true if you have to use blinds or privacy film due to the position of your home.

Try to find lighting that brings a natural feeling. Soft, warm lighting is perfect. If you have existing fittings, try changing the bulbs to warm white ones rather than bright, clinical ones.

Mirrors are a great way to enhance the light you have. As the light reflects off the mirror, it will bounce around the whole room and lift it.

How to create a spa style bathroom

When you look at the concept of ‘zen’, you will notice that plants play a large role. Adding some foliage to your bathroom will not only improve the air quality, but it will help you relax. You will need plants that can survive in areas with higher humidity such as peace lilies or Boston ferns.

If you wanted to enhance your relaxation you could embrace the art of aromatherapy. Diffusers with scents such as lavender and sandalwood. Your brain will start to associate smelling these smells with relaxation, enhancing your experience whenever you step into your bathroom to unwind.
