Our homes are our safe space. It is where we go to relax after a long day at work, it is where we bring our children up, it is where we gather for meals and get together with our loved ones and it is where we create our lasting memories and enjoy our lives.
When we buy our own home, it is one of the biggest expenses that we have in our lives, however, when we move in, it may not feel quite like home yet. We need to make it our own, make it cosy and fill it full of things that we love so that we can make the house a home. A house is just a dwelling, but the home is filled with love, memories and families. Making your home cosier and upgrading over time is how you can do that. There are so many different ways you can upgrade your home and here are some tips and ideas to make it cosier while upgrading it.
Add A Conservatory
A conservatory is a great way to not only add a cosy element to your home but also add some value to the equity of your property. If you add a conservatory with a glass design you can add it as an extra cosy room in your home to use all year.
A conservatory can be wonderfully cosy when you’re sitting inside relaxing in the warmth with a cup of tea or a good book and listening to the sound of the rain outside. Imagine how wonderful it’ll be when you have a nice clear night, especially if you live out in the countryside and you can see all the stars while being cosy in your own home. You could create the conservatory as your little library and fill it full of all your favourite books, you could make it into a playroom for the children or even a dining area, so you can dine under candlelight in a cosy atmosphere.
Add A Fireplace
There are lots of different ways that you can add a fireplace to your home. A lot of old homes have the foundations for a fireplace already, but during a period of modernising decor, a lot of them were bricked up or covered up. You can see if you have the foundations of one in your home and re-create it into a wonderful cosy fireplace.
If you don’t have the foundations for a fireplace, you could try to add one in and just buy a wood burner which you don’t need a chimney for, but it will still give the desired effect of flickering fire to keep you warm and keep the room nice and toasty and cosy. If you have children in the house, you will need to get things like fire covers as well as if you have dogs or other animals, just to keep them safe, however, adding a fireplace into your home will add a cosy element and make your house feel more like a home. It is also an upgrade that doesn’t have to cost a lot and you can do it on a bit of a budget.
Focus On The Lighting
Just like a fireplace, warmer lighting will add depth to your home and make it feel cosier. Rather than using big lights which make the room bright, instead focus on things like candles, lamps and twinkly fairy lights. These will all make your rooms feel cosier and more relaxing than the big bright light on the ceiling.
Warm lighting is a key element to a cosy household so if you did want to use the ceiling light you could always install a dimmer switch so you can have it on a lower light setting. It also can help children feel more relaxed, it can help them transition to bedtime more easily as they feel cosier and go from warm soft light to bed rather than big bright light to dark which can make them struggle with the change.
Textures And Layers Make A Big Difference
Another big factor which contributes towards a cosy home and the look of an inviting space is different textures and layers within the room. For example, in your living room there could be things like different textures on the cushions, such as cotton, linen, velvet or wool. You could add a warm fluffy rug on the floor, as well as have throws readily available so you can snuggle up, especially when it’s cold.
Throws and blankets are a great way to add a cosy element to your home; you could have them hanging on the back of the sofa, the arm of a chair or you could simply get a wicker basket in the corner of the room full of different blankets so you, your kids or guests can grab a blanket and cosy up on the sofa, ready for a relaxing evening.
Freshen Up The Walls With A Coat Of Paint
A simple and cost-effective way to update your home and make it feel cosy is to add a fresh coat of paint to the walls. When you want to repaint a room for the purpose of making it feel cosier, opt for more earth-tone colours, like sage, green, coffee or even a natural beige. If you want to add some more deep tones, choose earthy tones like a dark brown or green. If your room is small, add a feature wall of dark colour and use a lighter colour in the same colour scheme as the other walls to tie the room together nicely.
