There’s no doubt that microwaves are essential to many kitchens. Many of us use them to cook when we’re pushed for time but still want a hot meal, or simply to reheat leftovers. But have you given much thought to where your microwave is placed? The countertop might be the most obvious option, but if you need more space when preparing food, there are better ideas for positioning the microwave. Here are seven ideas for microwave placement to help you organise your kitchen.
1. On a high shelf
If you have open shelving and find that not all the space is in use, this could be the perfect place to put the microwave. Filling leftover space with a microwave can help the shelves to look more balanced by eliminating large gaps, and keeps the microwave out of the way so that you can use the countertop for other things.
2. In a drawer
If your idea of an organised kitchen means that everything not currently in use is tidied away and out of sight, consider putting your microwave in a purpose-built drawer. As microwaves come in a range of sizes, the size and shape of your drawer will depend on what kind of microwave you have.
3. In a cabinet
A microwave cabinet is a great way to save countertop space while creating extra storage. This type of cabinet has a shelf specifically for the microwave to sit on, with a cupboard underneath and, in some cases, more shelf space above.
4. Built into a wall
Having a microwave built into the wall is another great space-saving solution, and gives the kitchen a modern, minimalist look. The only downside is that, if you decide to redecorate or rearrange things in your kitchen, the microwave will have to stay in the same place.
5. Over the range
Similar to a microwave built into the wall, placing a microwave over the range makes the kitchen feel modern and frees up more space. It also means that your oven, stove and microwave are in one place, which is convenient when you’re cooking multiple dishes at once.
6. On a stand
Placing a microwave on a stand is one of the most convenient options, as you can place the stand wherever you want and move it when necessary. Using a stand is a bit like a smaller, more portable version of a cabinet, although you won’t get the extra storage that comes with a cabinet. Whether you choose a stand or a cabinet depends on whether storage is a priority for you.
7. On a low shelf
If you like the idea of placing your microwave on a shelf but you don’t want it to be too visible, a low shelf might be the solution. It keeps the microwave off the countertop and makes use of any spare shelf space you may have. Keep in mind, however, that a particularly low shelf might cause more problems than it solves – if you’re constantly having to crouch down to set the timer and take food in and out of the microwave, chances are you’ll soon find yourself looking for somewhere else to put it.
