Create a snug and cosy home

Snug typography cushion

As we’re super keen to help you create a cosy home at every opportunity, we couldn’t possibly miss this cushion cover, which celebrates the joy of creating a snug and cosy home.

The contemporary style cushion draws on industrial chic influences and the trend for typography on home accessories. The front of the cushion features a distressed typewriter print, on a rustic hessian background, with the definition of the word snug.

The Snug cushion cover measures 38cm by 38cm and is available to buy from Lincolnshire-based Betsy Jarvis - a duck feather pad insert is available too if required.

Why Roman Blinds are the right choice for your home

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Sponsored post on Cosy Home Blog from Roman Blinds Direct

Anyone who has decorated a room can tell you that choosing window coverings is one of the toughest parts of the process. Whilst the traditional solution is always likely to be curtains, day by day many people are starting to realise the potential of the less pricey option – Roman Blinds. Whilst curtains often need to be custom made – a time-consuming and expensive process – blinds can often be fitted and changed as regularly and conveniently as you like.

Whilst the stereotypical view of blinds is flimsy, thin plastic structures that turn mouldy and snap upon contact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the 1980s style plastic has gone out of the metaphorical window and has been replaced by a number of different materials. You’re more likely to find blinds these days made out of cloth or bamboo. Got environmental concerns? Don’t worry – a lot of modern-day blinds are made using a wide range of naturally sourced materials including tea leaves and cotton.

The sheer range of colours and materials available when purchasing a set of Roman Blinds means that they are sure to match furnishings in any room – no matter how outlandish the current decoration is. Depending on how prominent you want your windows to be, you can choose colours to either make them stand out or become a fixture in the background

It’s not just a case of choosing a colour scheme and a material though. Another important dilemma is whether to fit a flat or hobbled design blind. The flat design, as the name suggests, covers the entire window and lies perfectly flat on the window when closed. When the pull string is drawn, the blind forms a number of folds which display the importance of the pattern as it must also look good when folded.

Just like clothing and many other things, the blind industry moves in circles and old ideas are often recycled with a modern spin on them. Roman Blinds are a perfect example of a retro idea which has moved with the times, and so should you.

10 Tips for Choosing Curtains For Your Home

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011
Natural curtain ideas from The Natural Curtain Company

Bedroom curtains

Well chosen curtains can instantly transform the look and feel of a room, even becoming a focal point in their own right. If you’re looking for new curtains for your home, then here are 10 tips for successfully choosing curtains!

1. For a classic look, find curtains in a material that will compliment the design, colours and patterns you already have in the room. If you’re unsure of which shade of colour to go for, then opting for neutral, beige or cream curtains can usually be a good safe bet.

2. Plain curtains can be a good option if you already have patterned wallpaper, or a patterned carpet, as adding more pattern to the room – even if it matches – can be overkill!

3. For a more eclectic look, consider using contrasting curtains, or be brave and mix and match colours and patterns.

4. Think about what style you’d like the top of your curtains to have and how you’d like them hung. For the classic look, curtain tracks are a popular choice, but for a more relaxed contemporary look, the tab top style or eyelet curtains can add a stylish feel to a room.

5. If your windows are a standard size, then buying ready made curtains can work out as an affordable option for your needs.

6. For windows that don’t conform to standard sizes, made-to-measure curtains can be ordered to produce the perfect size, length, style and design of curtains you require. This is also a good option if there’s a specific curtain style that you’d like.

7. If a room tends to be dark and you’d like more light in the room, then opt for sheer or lightweight curtains.

8. For rooms that can be chilly or draughty during the winter months, a heavier weight of curtain can help to keep the warmth in and create a cosier room.

9. For a bedroom, where you’d like the room to be darker to help you get a better night’s sleep, an extra lining layer of blackout material (which doesn’t have to be black!) can be added to keep unwanted light out.

10. Finishing touches are just as important as the curtains themselves, so give attention to trimmings and tie backs.

For ready made, or made to measure curtains, check out the great range of fabrics and options from the Natural Curtain Company.
