- Art of Yorkshire garden (Image courtesy of PA Picselect)
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is on this week and we’ve been loving the new artisan gardens. There are some fantastic designs and gardens that look as if they’ve been plucked from a rustic country cottage.
It always amazes us how quickly the gardens are created for the show and how they end up looking so established, even though they’ve been created on site in days.
One of the many gardens that caught our eye is the Art of Yorkshire garden, which celebrates Yorkshire’s art and landscape through the eyes of an artist. The empty frame on the artists easel provides a frame to look at the garden with, as an artist would. The handbuilt stone walls are reminiscent of the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales and even the cracks between the paving stones have been filled with plants, just as they would if growing naturally in a cottage garden.
Even if you can’t get to the show this year, you can view all the gardens on the BBC website or the RHS website. There’s also the chance to vote for your favourite gardens in the People’s Choice Award 2011…plus you could win yourself tickets to the Hampton Court Palace Show in July.

Grow climbing plants in your garden
If you’re looking to grow scented climbing plants in your garden, such as honeysuckle, passionflower or clematis, then here’s a great offer to help you achieve this.
This garden planter set comes with a large garden planter and attached trellis. All you need to do is choose some plants, plant them in the planter and they’ll -( hopefully!) – grow up the trellis and produce a beautiful display of colour and scent. It’s a lot less hassle than having to fix trellis to an existing wall or fence, as everything is provided for you.
If that’s not enough, the garden planter and trellis set is currently on a special offer – buy one, get one free! You could use the planters alongside each other, position them either side of a patio, use them to create a ‘wall’ effect, so you can screen off parts of your garden into mini rooms.
The one shown here is the wide option, but there’s also a smaller narrow planter available too. Both trellis and planter sets can be purchased from House of Bath.

Grow your own herbs
If you’re short on space, then here’s a nice way of creating your own herb garden, inside or outside your home.
This wooden herb rack is designed to be mounted on a wall and the country look works just as well in a kitchen as it does outside on a garden, greenhouse or shed wall.
The rack comes with a set of galvanised pots, so you can get planting your herbs straightaway.
The wall mounted herb rack and pots costs £40, from Graham and Green.

Oh my! I was browsing for garden chairs and came across this beauty. Made from eucalyptus wood, this is a garden chair with a difference – it’s a rocking chair too!
I can just imagine sitting outside in the garden on this, gently rocking in the warm sunshine, with an ice cold drink by my side.
The rocking chair has a sled-style base to create the rocking, curved arms and a slatted seat. It looks well constructed and sounds like a brilliant idea for a relaxing afternoon in the garden.
The eucalyptus outdoor rocking chair costs £99 and is available to buy from John Lewis.

This lovely white decorative tree is suitable for use outside in the garden, as well as in your home.
The tree is covered in 70 tiny pin-size lights, which create a magical effect when they’re turned on. It would be the perfect accompaniment to have on your patio for summer evening entertaining, or it could light up the corner of a room at dusk.
The branches of the tree can be gently bent, so you can have it styled like a cherry tree or a weeping willow.

Gorgeous pink peony
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and a number of retailers are selling special pink-themed products to help raise money for this vital cause.
Shopping channel QVC screened their annual Breast Cancer Care (BCC) event last night, where the net profit of all items sold goes to charity. Last night their website didn’t cope too well with the numbers of people trying to order online, but that’s a blessing in disguise if you missed the event, as lots of goodies are still available to buy this morning.
Amongst the products, we spotted this gorgeous deep pink tree peony. The peony flowers from late spring to early summer and is apparently quite resistant to frost. Usually costing £12.50, it has a special Breast Cancer Care price of only £9.38.

Create a special seat in your garden
Wouldn’t this be the perfect seat for your garden?
Made from natural timber, the arbour features an ample sized seat, with a nicely shaped wooden roof and trellis at the sides. The enclosed sides would provide some excellent shelter from the hot sun or gentle wind and it could be your special spot in the garden to retreat to for a spot of quiet reading or relaxation.
During the summer, you could grow sweat peas, clematis or honeysuckle up the sides of the trellis, so you’d be surrounded be pretty flowers and delicate scent.
The Rowlinson Tenbury arbour is sold by Garden Chic and needs a bit of self-assembly to get it ready for your garden. It’s currently priced at £229.95 and delivery to mainland UK is free.

Gorgeous garden summerhouse
If my garden was big enough, I’d love this summerhouse at the bottom of it. I’d fill it with comfy chairs, cushions and a small table and retreat to the bottom of the garden to read, write and relax. On sunny days like today, I’d sit inside to avoid the strong heat of the sun, with the doors and windows propped wide open to allow an occasional breeze to blow through.
Made by Crane, the summerhouse is made from high grade FSC cerfied Scandinavian redwood, which is finished with cream paint (a sage version is available too) and cedar shingle tiles on the roof. Inside, the summerhouse is spacious, with wooden floors, double doors, windows that open and solid brass fittings.
Exclusive to John Lewis, the cream summerhouse is made to order and is delivered and assembled by Crane specialists. Perhaps it’s the ideal addition for your garden?

Get equipped for camping
If you’re planning on going camping, or simply have a lot of picnics planned for the summer, then take advantage of this great offer from Camel and Yak.
They’ve put together a number of useful, hard-wearing melamine items produced by Rice to form an essential camping kit.
For £20, you get six stylish plastic plates, with a flower design in the middle of them, 12 mini food keepers, which are great for keeping all sorts of nibbles in, plus a set of two food containers, each of which has three levels of storage in it and useful handles that allow them to be carried (a bit like tiffin carriers, but made from melamine). These two are a great size, making them ideal for sandwiches, cakes, fruit or even for taking your cutlery in.
Even if you’re not a fan of the great outdoors, all the items would be useful for your home too – the plates are ideal for eating outside in the garden and the storage containers will get used time and time again.
