What Wallpaper to Decide On?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011
Very wallpaper ideas

Graham and Brown Barley wallpaper

Wallpaper has become a popular wall decorating choice and there’s a wide variety of options available. But with so many options available, choosing which wallpaper to decide on can seem a difficult task.

First you have to find the right colour and shade to match the rest of your room interior design scheme, then there’s the tricky decision of whether to opt for a pattern or not. On top of all this you need to pick out the wallpaper type you’d like too and, with several types out there, it can be difficult to choose.

A good ‘all round’ wallpaper is vinyl wallpaper. This is the perfect type of wallpaper for all rooms; hang it anywhere from the kitchen to bathroom and bedroom for a consistent finish. This is a very durable wallpaper which is easy to hang and can be subjected to a lot of scrubbing and moisture.

Flock wallpaper is an old favourite of many with its raised velvet patterns and is found in homes across the country. This type of wallpaper is perfect for the more ‘formal’ rooms, such as dining rooms. Due to the velvet on this wallpaper, sometimes it’s best to vacuum it before putting it up to get rid of any loose particles.

Grass cloth wallpaper is an interesting new type of wallpaper. As the name suggests, this product is made from a weave of natural grasses. This is a good option if you’d like a textured wallpaper but, as the paper is made from natural grasses,  you need to be aware that it may be uneven in places. In addition, as the grass is dyed, there can be some colour and shade differences between the pieces of wallpaper.

It’s also important to remember that with any wallpaper you will also need lining paper. Lining paper is a vital part of any wallpaper purchase, as it helps protect the wall and hide any deficits in the wall. This comes in grades from 400 to 1200 with a higher grade being a better quality and weight.

5 Reasons to Use Neutral Colours in Your Home

Neutral home decor from Laura Ashley

We often hear that we should use neutral paint colours when decorating our homes – property developers and designers in magazines and on television preach daily about the virtues of minimising clutter and creating a calm and stress-free environment.

Here are 5 good reasons why using neutral colours in your home can be beneficial and help create a cosy and welcoming home.

1. Neutral colours promote calm and relaxation

Neutral colours can be used to generate a feeling of light, space, and calm. Colours such as white, grey, cream, or beige used for your walls and flooring are able to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Create a space where you can come home and unwind, rather than being bombarded with bright colours which make it hard for your mind to switch off.

2. Neutral colours are easy to accessorise

Once you have a neutral background, you can create your colour scheme using cleverly placed home accessories. Use bold, black picture frames against a white wall, and tie in with black and grey or silver accents in your curtains, cushions, rugs and other soft furnishings.

Similarly, use bright colours against creams and beiges to give colour to an otherwise plain room. Using patterns and texture in your furnishings, or creating a feature wall, works well in giving depth and interest.

3. Neutral colours are simple to change

If you fancy changing your colour scheme, you don’t have to go to the trouble and expense of redecorating. Changing a few key items can update a tired room without breaking your budget. Neutral colour schemes go with anything, whether you want to tone things down with a pale, light colour, or jazz it up using bright and bold items.

If you have a colour scheme in mind, try using different shades, textures and patterns. Changing the layout of furniture in a room can make a huge difference to the space.

4.Neutral paint colours fit well with any style

Whether you want a country kitchen or a contemporary look, using a neutral backdrop lends itself to whatever style you choose. For a classic, traditional room, look for natural wood, rustic pieces, and classic styles. Get inspiration by visiting reclamation yards and thrift shops.

If you want something more up-to-date, why not mix gleaming chrome with glass. Go for statement pieces with gloss finishes, which also reflect light around the room.

5. Neutral paint colours are more desirable if you sell

If you are planning on selling your home, using neutral colours on your walls and floors helps buyers see the potential of the property. If you’ve decorated using bright, bold colours, people coming into your home can find it difficult to see beyond that, and can be put off.

Buyers need to be able to visualise their possessions in your house, so be kind to them by creating a blank canvas which will help them to do this.

It’s not often you find pink ostriches available on wallpaper, but this fun design has been created by Turner Pocock, in conjunction with Catherine Cazalet.

The nicely designed wallpaper is certainly not overpowering and, from a distance, you wouldn’t even know there are ostriches on it; it’s only when you’re up close that you get to fully appreciate the design.

The neutral and pink ostrich wallpaper is suitable for use in both adult and children’s rooms and is available to purchase, for £70.50 per roll, from Rockett St George.

Planning a Room Makeover Part 2

How Much Paint or Wallpaper To Buy?

For carpets and flooring, it is best to have the professional fitters come to measure up your room. For paper or paint, you need to start by working out the area of your room. Do this by measuring the width of each wall and adding all the widths together. Multiply this by the height of the room, to give the total area. Strictly, you should then work out the area of each window and door, and take these areas off your wall area. However most stores will give you a refund if you take back any unused rolls of wallpaper or unopened tins of paint – so by not subtracting the areas of the windows and doors you make sure you have plenty of paint or paper for the job.

Take a note of this area and a calculator with you when you go to look for paper or paint. Divide the area of your walls by the area covered by each roll of paper or tin of paint (see the label!) to find out how many you need to buy. It is best to buy all you need at the same time, and if you are buying wallpaper make sure that they all carry the same batch number, as different batches may have slight differences in colour.

Which Order to Do The Work?

The big things in a room makeover are decorating the walls and ceiling, and having new flooring. Anything else can be done bit by bit, but for those big tasks you need to empty the room.  If you are doing all the work yourself, then a sensible order of work is as follows.

Planning a Room Makeover: Part 1

By Penny Johnson

Making over a room can be great fun, and can really improve your home when it is complete. However it can also be hard work and cost a lot of money – so you want to be sure you get it right. What do you need to think about before you start? Planning can seem a bit of a bore if you just want to get on with it, but it is usually worth the bother in the long run.

What Do You Want To Achieve?

Spend a bit of time thinking about the room you are going to make over. What do you like about it? Which features do you want to keep? What don’t you like about it?

What do you want the room to do? Do you need it to have more storage space, less clutter, more light, a more relaxing mood? When you have given this some thought, number your list in order of importance. Which change will make the most difference?

How Much Can You Spend?
