The Rangemaster Elan: Stylish Retro Cooking

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012
Next best thing to an Aga

Rangemaster Elan

Rangemaster is a name synonymous with range cooking. Their collection spans the traditional and classically styled models through to contemporary stainless and gloss black range cookers. Many people consider the traditional sector to be where Rangemaster excels, and the Rangemaster Elan is a perfect example of this. This compact 90cm version happens to be one of our favourite models, too.

The Elan’s appearance harks back to a simpler time when there were only two television stations and shops didn’t open on a Sunday. It is visually the closest thing in Rangemaster’s collection to an AGA, thanks to hefty oven doors, distinctive control knobs and stylishly retro wire-wound handles that are straight out of the 1950’s. Oh, and a nice chrome temperature gauge on the tall oven door that adds nicely to the vintage appeal. If the Fonz used a range cooker, it would be the Elan.

This retro-chic exterior belies the cooking powerhouse beneath – a combination of multifunction and fanned ovens can take care of anything thrown at them, while the rugged hob area offers five gas burners, one of which is a powerful wok burner, and a removable half ribbed griddle adds to the versatility and authenticity. The hob furniture is all cast iron which affords it a sturdy resilience perfect for the traditional kitchen.

Build quality is extremely high, as you’d expect from anything that comes from Aga Rangemaster’s UK factory – everything feels solid, dependable and long lasting, from the lustrous enamels to the quality chrome detail on handles and control knobs.

We can’t praise the Elan 90 enough. It performs beautifully and looks as cool as a very cool thing indeed, especially in the cream finish that suits its handsome vintage looks perfectly – and all at a sensible price too.

Interior Home Improvements

Home and electrical appliances

Essential kitchen appliances

When carrying out home improvements, your attention is likely to be paid almost entirely to what you’ll need. You’ll have a good idea of what tools you’ll need to make them, and have a clear, well thought-out idea of how your interior will look once finished.

However, there are some things which can help to improve how your home looks that may surprise you. Installing an electrical appliance such as a washing machine could have much the same effect as, say, painting the walls of your kitchen in an unusual colour.

If you have regular visitors to your home like friends and family, they look around your home to make sure that everything’s in the right place. If they see something new, they’re more than likely to comment on it. If you’ve recently bought a dishwasher and they see it, they’ll notice that it’s new and ask where you bought it.

Whether or not you want your home improvements to grab visitors’ attention is up to you, but if it’s an improvement on what was there before, they’ll let you know.

When buying a new appliance, you’ll want it to fit around any improvements to your décor that you have in mind. Most electrical appliances are seen as little more than white goods, but many appliances look sleek, stylish and, in some cases, downright futuristic.

Just looking for a fridge freezer or washing machine that looks good might not be the best thing to do, as you’ll also want one that’s affordable and laden with innovative features such as a frost-free freezer compartment and a cold wash facility. If you do this, then any home improvements you do will be made a lot easier.

If you decide to buy new appliances as part of your home improvements, make sure that you install them carefully so that they don’t look out of place. Doing that could risk putting all your good work to waste!

Range Cookers for Traditional Kitchens

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Traditional country kitchen cookers Traditional kitchen cookers

The cooker is usually the centrepiece of any kitchen, and often sets the visual tone of the entire room, be it a comfortable, homely, ‘worn in’ feel or sleek, utilitarian look. It is therefore essential to select the range cooker that will influence the room in the way you want.

When choosing a range cooker for a more traditional kitchen, you ideally want something that looks immediately at home and part of the fittings – think AGA-esque – and what better way to achieve this than with beautifully beveled doors to soften harsh lines, and heavy ‘rustic’ cast iron pan supports?

Arched baker’s oven-style windows add interest and relax the eye ensuring that the cooker doesn’t sit at odds to its environment, and lustrous heavy enamel lends an air of reassuring solidity.

Colours tend to lie at the subtle end of the spectrum, with creams, blacks and muted reds and greens being prolific. Chrome or brass trim adds visual relief to the frontage through oven door handles and full width towel rails, and control knobs tend to be more finialed and decorative than the minimalistic style of contemporary counterparts.

One nice detail that it is fairly common to see on traditionally-styled range cookers is an oven temperature gauge (again, shades of AGA) – not particularly useful but enhances the aesthetic nicely. When it comes to the hob area, gas burners are the only way to go for true authenticity and again enhance the overall ruggedness of the cooker – ceramic or induction hobs sometimes look almost sterile in a traditional setting.

Although most manufacturers offer classically styled range cookers, manufacturers noted for their traditional models include Rangemaster (particularly their excellent Classic, Elan and Elise collections), Redfyre and pedigree French cooker manufacturer Lacanche.

Cosy home heating ideas

Piermont electric stove

If you love the look of traditional black stoves, but want to benefit from electric heating, then here’s a great looking stove that fits the bill perfectly.

The Piermont stove has all the appeal of a traditional woodburner stove, but actually runs on electric.

Made by Dimplex, the stove includes their realistic Opti-myst smoke and flame effect – the settings allow for variable flames and smoke intensity – helping it to look like the real thing. You can also make use of this effect when the heat is off.

The  Dimplex Piermont stove usually retails for about £720 in high street stores. There are often heating bargains to be found if you look online – for example, it’s currently available from The Electric Fire shop store on Ebay for £544.
