What are the British well-kept secrets for a good night’s sleep? The question was asked of 2,000 Britons who agreed to take a poll commissioned by a UK bedroom furniture specialist. The number 1 answer comes as no surprise. Exactly 56% of people polled consider that a top quality mattress is the key to a wonderful night’s sleep.

Since at Wedo we know our way around a mattress we thought this was perfect timing to remind you of the UK standard mattress measurements.

* Small single mattresses are 75cm wide and 190cm long which is equivalent to 2ft 6in by 6ft 3in
* Single mattresses are 90cm wide and 190cm long which is equivalent to 3ft by 6ft 3in
* Small double mattresses are 120cm wide and 190cm long which is equivalent to 4ft by 6ft 3in
* Double mattresses are 135cm wide and 190cm long which is equivalent to 4ft 6 by 6ft 3in
* King size mattresses are 150cm wide and 200cm long which is equivalent to 5ft by 6ft 6in
* Superking mattresses are 180cm wide and 200cm long which is equivalent to 6ft by 6ft 6in

With bed sizes, the measurements are the same as for mattresses. Therefore a double mattress will fit a double bed, a king size mattress will fit a king size bed and so on. Of course provided that both mattress and bed measurements are expressed according to the standards of the British bedding industry.

For example, a US king size mattress won’t fit a UK king size bed since the “king size” in the UK and in the USA are not the same.  For the record a standard US king size mattress is 193cm wide and 203cm long which is even bigger than a UK superking mattress.
